More people move to the cities and a grow of around 40 mill. new citizens are expected in the European cities before 2050. This development requires a further growth of the city infrastructure, new buildings and new dwellings in the cities.
A majority of the domestic building stock in the European cities is recognized as being buildings with 4-6 stories having a potential for energy efficiency renovation and a potential to utilize the roof and the existing attic for new attractive dwellings.
New dwellings in the attic can partly finance the renovation of the existing building and thereby become a tool for investing in modernization of the existing buildings in the cities. As the new dwellings do not require new infrastructure for energy and transport it is also an affordable solution for the city administration.
The masterclass discusses potentials, barriers and solutions with examples from different cities.
